Motherboard not booting after case installation

Hi All,

Specifications:

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/antblazer/saved/3BM0

I messed up and installed the motherboard before the standoffs were in place.

These are all new components, other than an empty hard drive I had.

I tested the motherboard before I installed it in the case. Everything worked fine -- fan on, display on. RAM was in, one video card was in, processor installed ( I did not plug in the speaker).

When I installed the case, the Newegg instruction video mentioned standoffs, but I did not google it to make sure I had them correct (I gathered from the video that they were just screws that needed to be in place at the right spots).

When I installed the motherboard without standoffs, it did not start at all at first. There were no crazy smoking and/or sparks or anything, just silence. I realized my mistake, uninstalled the motherboard, installed the standoffs, then reinstalled the motherboard.

All components in place, the motherboard only turns on (with no beep from the now plugged in speaker) and there is not a display. The motherboard shows one LED lit (power level 1), and three LED blinking (power levels 2-3). When I unplug the four-pin connector from the PSU to the motherboard, there are no blinking lights and only the power level 1 LED shows.

I removed it from the case to test it again outside of the case (both times I did this, I tested it on the box the motherboard came in). The same result as in the case. On, with the CPU fan running, but no display or beep.

I suspect I fried the motherboard, but I read that it is unusual for a motherboard to fry upon powering on without standoffs, and especially when you didn't see any evidence of it after powering it on.

I'm open to any suggestions. I did follow the fruitful guide here on Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems), I tried unplugging everything, holding the power button down to release the leftover power, I tested RAM from another machine, used multiple monitors and cables, tried both video cards in both slots, and pulled most of my hair out, no luck.

Thanks for reading this far. I hope someone can find an answer!

your motherboard is being short circuited by the case because its touching it. you need to install the motherboard standsoff so that the motherboard doesnt touch the metal case.

also what motheboard do u have? you might find something in the manual for the LED light coding.

@M0j0jojo I did install the standoffs, after I realized the mistake. Now the motherboard won't even boot OUTSIDE the case (I explain it above)!

The motherboard is MSI 970A-G46, shown above in the link to pcpartpicker. The manual only mentions LEDs in terms of power levels, and does not mention blinking.

I suppose that was the thing to do! I used a PSU from my htpc, and it booted up fine! Thank goodness I didn't go out and buy another motherboard!

Thanks anonymous1, you saved the day! (And hopefully people in the future won't assume it is the motherboard too quickly).

Thanks, but it looks like we've diagnosed the PSU. I may need a higher wattage for these components anyway. I looked in the manual and it said nothing about beeping -- I'll look at the link you provided too, thanks for looking it up.
