Hi folks, I'm having issues with my pc shutting down while gaming. It doesn't matter what the game is, from an 8-bit 2d game to the latest 3d game. And it only happens while gaming. I recently replaced both the video card and power supply, and the problem has persisted through those hardware swaps, so they can be ruled out. Have any ideas about what the problem could be? Here's my specs:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA 990 XA-UD3
CPU: AMD FX 8350
RAM: Patriot Signature 8GB
Video: EVGA GTX 760 (brand new)
Power: Rosewill Tachyon 1000W 80+ Platinum Certified (brand new)

What are your idle/load CPU temps? The system could be overheating and shutting down to prevent damage.

Just ran HeavyLoad to test the CPU, turns out that was the case. The CPU climbed up to 90 degrees from an idle level of 42-50, and the system promptly shut down. Now, what could be the cause of overheating? I dusted the whole thing out after installing my new parts, so it can't be dust. Can thermal paste go bad after six months' wear? Or should I be looking at getting a new CPU cooler?

It's a risk but it could be the thermal paste under the heatsink, must be wearing off. Try removing the heatsink and checking that (you'll want to have some replacement thermal compound though since the thermal paste will break when you remove the heatsink).

Or if you're using a stock heat sink, try getting a aftermarket cooler. Stock Heatsinks hardly work

Stock heatsinks aren't great, but they are adequate for cooling a CPU at stock speed. That's what they were designed to do, after all. :)

My guess would be that either there is a problem with the thermal paste, or the heatsink isn't installed properly.
