I am looking for a GPU upgrade. I have around $270 at hand, and I have narrowed it down to two choices

EVGA GTX 760 w/ ACX Cooler 2GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130932

MSI R9 270X 4GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127775

Will the 4GB of VRAM boost the performance of the 270X to compete with the GTX 760, or will the better silicon on the 760 still outperform a 270X with 4 Gigabytes of RAM

Also, I am looking to use these cards until Mid-Late 2015. (Of course, by then, I would be running games on medium settings), so the 4GB of VRAM might help in the future as texture sizes are obviously getting larger and larger.

Also, I am thinking of doing some cryptocurrency mining, and AMD does a much better job on that.

I can't afford a 7950 w/Boost. That was what I was going to buy, until AMD slowed down 7950 production and a bunch of miners started buying it.

I am a Battlefield player, so mantle matters to me

Basically, this is why I am stuck

R9 270X: Mantle+good OpenCL Performance and good future proofing (more VRAM): 3 points

GTX 760: Better performance when compared to 2GB 270X and 7950 (that counts as two points because I care about performance)+AMD Mantle: 3 points

the 760 is about 20% faster... it's closest radeon competition is the hd 7950, not the hd 7870/r9-270x

both cards are not fast enough to use more then 2gb of vram. The reason they're selling the r9-270x with 4gb of vram is for xfire. in theory the r9-270x is just barely fast enough to use a little more then 2gb (close to 3) when in xfire.

The question for you is what is your cpu? If you are using an intel, it's doubtful mantle will give you enough of a boost to make the r9-270x a more atractive option then the 760. If you're using a 6 core or more FX cpu, the boost you'll get from mantle will be significant enough that you'll likely see the r9-270x come close to or even outperform the 760.

If you want my opinion, it would be to skip both of them~ get yourself a r9-270 with 2gb of gddr5 vram for $170, mantle will make it perform close to the gtx760... the r9270 is almost identical to the r9270x, and you don't need the 4gb of vram anyway. take the 100 you saved and get yourself a 120gb ssd for a boot drive and send me a xmas card for the suggestion

Thanks for the solutions. Should I wait for the R9 280 to come out? Its in the rumor mill. What I heard was that it is going to be a R9 280X with slower clock rates and slightly less transistors. Its rumored price is $249.99

I don't only play Battlefield. I also play Fallout, Skyrim, GTA IV (Going to get V on PC when it comes out). I am also prepping for Titanfall and Watch Dogs, two games that I have pre-ordered

Then i'd go with the 760.

yeah... if you play those games i'd just get the GTX 760... fallout, skyrim and GTA IV, are all nvidia titles and work better on nvidia. Don't bother waiting for the r9-280... miners will drive that price into the stratosphere.
