Hey guys this is more of an open discussion rather than a one right answer thread.

I was wondering for Windows 8 what free applications and software you recommend. I'm new to Windows 8.1 and have no clue what to look for. I have the a normall gamer things I need like HWMonitor, GPU-Z CPU-Z, MSI Afterburner and fraps.

Also can you guys help me learn how to customize it better? I don't know how to change the tile colors and tile background and all that but I've seen it done.

Solution
I don't own a machine that uses Windows 8.1, but I have recently fixed a Dell Latitude 3540 which my uncle managed to totally screw up (i.e. Virus Capital USA) in less than 4 months of ownership.

General free software that I personally use are:

Avast! Free Anti-Virus (installed on laptop)
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (installed on laptop)
Spybot 2 - For malware and rootkit remove and protection from certain websites.
CCleaner - Cleans up temp files / Windows Registry and more... (installed on laptop)
Media Player Classic Home Media - Nice little program to play all my videos
Handbrake - Used to encode videos to MKV format using x.264 codec
VirtualDub - Useful video encoder to create for older XviD codec AVI files
ImgBurn - DVD burner...
