HDD disappearing and appearing

Every time I boot up my PC, my Seagate 3TB hard drive shows as 3950MB in BIOS. Upon logging in to windows, its gone from my computer, and cannot initialize in Disk Management. For some reason, after a windows update is installed on my ssd, it shows up as its full capacity, ready to go, and works fine. Its always only one update installed, and I have automatic updates off.

I had this problem with a laptop hard drive and the culprit was the fact that it was dying. Eventually it never showed on the system again and I had to get it replaced. I wont say it's the reason for yours but it sounds alot like it.
