GPU not detected after game crash

Was playing Mass Effect when the entire system stuttered and rebooted. After that, the GPU isn't showing any output.

Not sure what's wrong or what happened to it. By the looks of it, it might be dead. As far as I can tell, its alive, but there's no output.

So far I've tried moving it to a different PCIE slot but it didn't do anything but confirm that the GPU is not responding. I've also tried using a different cable, using the GPU's other DVI output, and cleaning out the dust (doesn't look like it overheated but whatever), and its still not responding.

Hardware specs are as follows:
CPU: i5 3570k
Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V LK
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 660 ti OC rev 1
PSU Corsair TX 650 v2

Right now, I'm using the integrated GPU to use the pc; doesn't look like the mobo is at fault, or viruses if it ever does that sort of thing.

If anybody has anymore suggestions as to what else I can try to recover the GPU, please offer some input. Otherwise, I'm leaning towards the probability that the GPU is in a vegetative state (if that's how I would describe it).

Thanks

Solution

it works. saved 2 gpus, a motherboard and a sound card doing this. No guarantees how long it will work for, but i know people who've solved gpu artifacing doing this as well. Simply put, if the card is not covered by a warranty i'd try it because you have nothing to lose.

this is a legit solution when you have no other option. Look it up, its called the "oven trick"

You can uninstall drivers for the GPU then restart and reinstall them... also you could try using some sorta of Core Temp and GPU Temp programs to help from killing your stuff... I do this on everyones computer that runs Vista and Win 7... I haven't tried on Win 8/8.1.... Also you could have gotten a bad bin GPU and now its dead due to being OC all the time... I under clock all my GPU's so that they don't overheat even after hours of gaming.

mmm... i only know one way to recover a gpu that died... and it will void your warranty. if you still have the warranty then exercise it. if you do not...

Bake it in your oven, at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. You'll need to take the heatsink/fan off the card. wad tinfoil up and place it under the 4 corners of the card, so that it's not resting on anything directly. Let it cool down for 20-30 minutes, reapply some thermal paste, and the cooler. see if that works.

Assuming you didn't blow up something on the card this might fix your issue.

I'm not too sure about throwing a GPU into an oven unless I'm that desperate.

Besides that, the GPU isn't showing up in the Device Manager. Also, besides the factory OC, the GPU hasn't been modified in any way.

are you able to put it in another Computer and test it... if not take it to a local computer shop to have them do it... don't let them con you in to buying a new one till you see what they have done... and see them test it...
