What do you mean blew up? If its not turned on, there would be little current going through the PSU, not enough to make it fry. Did it work previously? If its the first time turning it on, then it may be DOA (dead on arrival)/defective.

So your OLD PSU blew? Well, if you checked that its plugged in properly, and it won't power on, then its shot. Good thing you have a new PSU coming in. The only thing I can think of that would cause a pop is a capacitor blowing inside the PSU. Also, as I've read, its possible that the PSU took down another component with it. Keep that in mind when installing the new PSU.

very strange... if the switch was off then power could not have been traveling through your psu... unless it was a serious surge, it would have to be huge though for the electricity to arc between the contacts of the switch... but it would have to be huge, many other appliances on that circuit would have been damaged too.

i guess a capacitor may have discharged somehow, that could explain the pop and it would have done some damage... does it smell burnt? that would be the best way to tell... if there was a pop, there will be a smell, even if it is slight.

another way electricity can make it into your system is through your ethernet cable, however the damage would be to your motherboard most likely.

Do you mean starting your PC with that PSU? I strongly advise you NOT to do that. If your pc is anything more then a cheap stock computer (from dell or something), then DO NOT use it. Especially if you're referring to a stock PSU. The stock PSU's company use are often bad, and don't actually put out what they say they do. So that 250W might put out, say, 150W. I'd wait until your new PSU comes in. Using a weak PSU can cause damage to your parts, as it won't be able to supply the proper power.
