Computer Refuses to Work without Original Hard Drive

I have a Compaq Presario sr1232. I recently cloned the hard drive to a larger newer one and left the HD installed. The computer booted and ran from the new HD. Then I disconnected the Original HD and the machine would not boot. I then attached the DATA CABLE only to the original drive and the machine boots and runs just fine off the cloned OS which is xp (no service packs). I cannot find any bios update to change this behavior.

Not a real problem I suppose to leave an unpowered/unspinning HD in the box "but" I'd like to clean it up a bit? Is there some way to divorce this machine from the Original HD?===or do I have something "wrong?" Thanks.

Phillip--that is an excellent idea. The original HD is IDE and the new HD is SATA...."but" I have a spare IDE drive and I will do exactly that. Might take a week or so, but I will report back.

I was thinking the sata data cable totally works because I can write to and read from and run programs from the new Hard Drive. I'm assuming the data cable on the Original Hard Drive is simply supplying some kind of hardware confirmation that the Presario as OEM equipment "demands"...but we won't know until we test that.

Thanks!!!

Other ideas?
