Hello tech community!

I have a TPLink TL-WR941ND router at home and me and my family want to connect multiple (3+) PCs to an oversea server all via VPN. The problem is after less than 10 minutes of connection we get error 691 and are disconnected one by one.

I read a number of forum posts and I believe my router cannot afford mutiple VPN at the same time. So does that mean after I get a new router (i often come up with names like netgear/snpagear, etc...) we can have stable VPN connection all at the same time???:??:

Or can I configure my TPLink router to do the job?
Are there any other suggestions to my problem?

Seeking help from the community. Please teach me more on the issue.
Thank you in advance and sorry for my poor English!:p

The VPN in these router images is version of open-vpn so you can go to the support page for that for details.

Using third party firmware really requires you study this a little. You have to be very careful to get the correct file images and follow the instructions exactly or else you run the risk of killing your router. There are gui configuration for most of the functions but it is a unix based OS so to do advanced functions you must have some unix knowledge.

If this is too complex you may want to consider just buying a VPN router instead. Still you would have to make sure it was compatible with the vpn site you are using.
It depends what method of VPN you are using. Things like PPTP user GRE which does not work well with nat. Petty much he router has to special understand this and allow it though and normally you can only get a single vpn to work. L2TP uses ipsec which tends to be even worse to get multiple tunnels.

If you are using SSL/TLS VPN (ie HTTPS) there should not be a issue.

The general solution to this is to move the VPN to the router itself. I don't think your router can support vpn directly but you could likely load a third party firmware such as dd-wrt or open-wrt that has the open-vpn software included in some builds.

Your problem may also be the server generally if you are getting a 691 message on a windows machine that is related to a userid/password issue.

Thanks for the prompt reply bill, does that mean I should first try to load a firmware to the router?
Can you tell me more about dd-wrt, open-wrt, how they work? Are they only for Linux?
Are they specified for VPN function on the router?

Thank you so much for your time.
