Why does my CPU clock frequency keep spiking?

Hello,
I've recently installed the Coretemp widget on my desktop, and noticed yesterday that my clock frequency (at idle) was shooting from around 1.650ghz up to 4.225 in rhythm every 5 seconds or so. This lasted for around half an hour or more. I checked the task manager and there seemed to be no demanding processes in action and CPU usage never went above 7%.. could this be signs of a virus?

Solution
What did you use to check for viruses?
Malwarebytes is the best virus cleaner out there, but it doesn't protect you from getting them.
What kind of powersupply do you have, are you using a surge protector?

Hmmm.. That's just my luck.. I only just rebuilt the damn thing! :fou:
I'll do a sweep later and hope it's not dug in too deep.
If no joy I'll come back and bump.

Thanks.

Sorry for the late update, but Malwarebytes was a great tip. Turns out I had something called 'Wajam' all over my sh*t, with over 100 registry entries... Never heard of it, or how it got there, but it's gone now- clocks all normal and temps have come down slightly to boot! Thanks!
