I am having trouble with choosing a cpu plus gpu. I can either choose the i5 cpu and spend less on the graphics card like a r9 270x. Or I buy a fx 6300 cpu and put the difference in a GTX 760 gpu. In terms of gaming what would be the better decision. I am thinking of both older and newer games like BF4 but also Skyrim etc

I would also go with the i5 and 270x. The 760 is on average about 15% better with both at stock clocks. The GTX 760 has a larger overclocking range though so after both are overclocked it is more like 20% difference. That is all based on average and fps highs though. The i5 and 270x will have a lower average fps but the minimum fps will be higher resulting in a better experience. Here's a theoretical example of what I mean: with the 6300 ur frame rate might be say 50 but drops from time to time down to 30. the i5 and 270x would get 45fps and in intense parts drop to 35-38. In other words you just get a better, and smoother, overall experience

I am currently running on an FX-6300 and an HIS 7950 ICE-Q (no boost clock). I can run Battlefield 4 on ultra at around 40 FPS (8GB RAM). Also, games that come out in the future are going to start utilizing all the cores of the CPU, and start splitting functions between cores. Battlefield 4 already has if you use the Mantle setting.

An i5 will be more future proof, but having a six core or maybe even an eight core (FX-8350, or something like that) will also benefit from multi core gaming in the future alot.
