Overclocking a CPU for the first time

I have just brought a new after-market cooler for my FX-6300 Black Edition and thought it'd be worth looking into overclocking. I know the basics on what it does but I have no idea how to actually do it so if someone could walk me through it, it would be appreciated. The current temp of my CPU is 19C which is under very little stress but under full load it goes up to around 40C, is this a safe temp to overclock from? Thanks in advance.

yes...those are safe temperatures.

The FX series are very easy to overclock...Id just bump up the multiplier to 20 in the bios and get 4.0 out of it. You should be able to do this without adjusting any voltages or anything and having to worry about the overclock carrying over to any other components.

Just turn of AMD's turbo mode and cool and quiet.

Great, thanks for the quick reply. Appreciate the help!

That motherboard does not have heatsinked VRMs, meaning they can overheat if you overclock. You could place a fan to blow cool air on to them to cool them down. With a mild overclock to ~4GHz they should be fine though. I wouldn't go further than 4.2.

So, are you saying I'll be safe up until 4GHz without extra cooling? There is about 4 fans in there altogether (CPU, GPU and 2 in case)

I would get 2 more case fans if I were you, but 4GHz should be achievable. Keep an eye on your temps.

I had another 2 but they wouldn't fit with the new cooler. I will look into over clocking it again in a bit
