Computer turned on by itself! Should I worry and wipe out the system?

Hi, the only programs I downloaded were Bitzipper and iLivid. Other than going to a few sites I don't normally go to, nothing was out of the ordinary. Last night my computer turned off by itself and then this morning it turned on by itself. I have malware bytes and avast and will be running that to check and see. Should I be doing anything else? Should I do something a bit more extreme and do a clean install of Windows 7?

If the PC turned ON by itself, this is not software You downloaded. The Power Supply and BIOS settings determine when a PC turns ON.

If the PC is not connected to a UPS, a power flicker could have caused it to turn on - it is possible to tell a PC that when power is first applied (after a time without power) to turn itself on.

It is possible someone hit the "ON" switch without Your noticing.

It could be the PC thought it got a "WAKE ON LAN" signal - I've seen that happen to half the PCs connected to one router when I rebooted / power cycled the router.

Or, it could be something else.

It seems rather unlikely that any virus could infect Your BIOS and then start turning on Your PC from an OFF state at a certain time, but it is not...
a PC turning off by itself could be a faulty PSU, overheating or a fluke in the power from your wall socket, turning on by itself hours later could point to the last cause, a fluke in your house's electric environment.

Check in BIOS if your pc is set to turn on by itself after a power failure (usually under ACPI options or energy settings)

if it's set to stay off, then most likely the issue is power instability in that socket wall.

If, RaDiKaL_ is right and You meant to say "OFF" then please let us know.
