Firstly, this is the secon time this happened, this time with a different computer and different usb thumbdrive manufacturer.

My 8 Gb thumbdrive was working fine on Ubuntu Linux a year ago (ext3 format), and was stored in airtight container for a year, and now it won't mount. Nothing other than the passage of time (14 months) can be to blame. (in windows it simply says the drive is not formatted and asks to reformat it)

Any thoughts as to if the drive can be rescued? Or why this would happen to a thumbdrive after a year?

Ok but still the drive won't mount in Linux, but it did a year ago. I wonder if there's anything I can do, or if these flashdrives go bad after a year in airtight storage.
