Thinking about which components to add or change for my next upgrade?

I mainly use pc for video rendering, picture editing, coding, a massive server( for 4 tb worth of kids movies, adult movies, tv epidsodes) which gets pushed to tv via hdmi or wifi/dlna, and gaming. Gaming is a few hours a week as of now, and consists of borderlands 2 mostly with a few games of bf4 or cod ghosts.

Will be wanting to upgrade as soon as I figure out which direction to go.
Not willing to change case or cooling.
Current specs are:
CPU - FX 8350 (overclocked to 5.0ghz stable yet warm)
Mobo - Asus M5A99FX Pro
Case - Corsair 540 Air
GPU - Evga gtx 770 dual OC
SSD - Intel 530, dual 240gb raid 0
HHD - Seagate 3tb, Tri raid 0
Ram - Patriot Vengence 4x4gb
PSU - Ultra 750w bronze full modular
Cooling - XSPC - 360mm rad, 240mm rad, raystorm cpu block, full vga block, d5 pump, 170mm photon res)
Misc - NZXT Sentry 2 fan controller and thermostat, hot swap bay for hhd takes up 2x5.25 bays but offers 3x3.25 hhd space, 2xblue cc led, 5x corsair high performance pvm 120mm fans, 1 nzxt high performance 140mm fan, monster surge protector, Logitech g710+ keyboard, Logitech g500s mouse, Logitech headset, xbox wired remote, xbox wireless remote receiver, 3x xbox wireless remote, AOC 23" led display, lg usb dvd rw drive, usb lg bluray rw drive

Total thoughts
-i7 4770k and asus maximux formula vi (slight performance boost but huge power consumption drop)
-i7 4930k and asus rampage black/extreme (boost in multithread performance but yields almost no energy savings) plus costs way more than 4770k upgrade
-gpu upgrade either second 770 go sli and watercool, or 780ti x1 and water cool (gpu upgrade will also include a evga 1200w psu upgrade as well)
-upgrade ram to corsair's best
-skip anything pc and get a asus rog laptop ($1300)
*note laptop upgrade, not any other for the matter are absolutely needed

*or feel free to add your own suggestions please

I should note *the i7 4770k upgrade I have worked out to saving me the cost of the upgrade in 3-5 years time*
So that one is high on my list, yet the i7 4930k will cost more yet yield me far greater performance, energy savings we will just say not taken into account as it offers a small drop compared to my fx 8350 chip and costs hundred more than the 4770k

Kind of overkill for a glorified home server. I would look into offloading your bulk files and storage off to a NAS with proper redundancy and moving this rig into being a dedicated game device. You don't need a big computer to record and transcode video, even a lowly i3 will do the trick.

Thanks for not only the input but the speedy reply.
My thoughts on the 780ti upgrade (which yes I did put as a potential upgrade) are that the upgrade will cost $1000+ (which ultimately doesn't matter), but the only upgradable path from there is a second 780ti (which is damn good setup) but will be limited by the 3gb ram. Now using only a single monitor I don't see this as a problem, just a point to any else reading this, could become a factor years to come.

Also, I don't game much and my card now hits 200's average of bf4 (yet again I don't need any of these upgrades).

Sorry to sound negative, these are just thoughts running through my head whenever I think about it.

*edit* also interested to see what nvida will be coming out with in the coming months, which is why I recently went 770 instead of 780/780ti as to get a good card for gaming now but not blow a wad of cash and to see this new card and die.

I think the cpu is good enough that you have already. I would get 16gb because you are getting faster times in rendering, etc which is what you do. Also, nvm for sli 770. I would get more ram so you can focus more on what you are actually doing.

Glorified home server, well yes. But I have it, its there, and its easy as heck to maintain and manage being part of my pc. Having an actual dedicated server will yield me no gains, and might actually require more work and create more problems than having it included into my system. A very nice key element, is that the videos I have must be converted to various formats to be playable on pc, windows tablet, android tables, and ipad. Having this on my pc really speeds up the converting time, as well as ripping the movies onto the drives.

I'm not sure if a server would have advantages over a pc?

I already have 16 gb ram. Would you mean the upgrade corsair ram option?
If so, my amd build really wouldn't yield a performance boost, as my ram now is only 1600 but has low latency times, and to reach my 5.0 ghz ive downclocked ram to somewhere between 600-800hz, lol. But ive benched before (pc at 4.8ghz ram at 1600's) and after (pc at 5.0 and ram at 600-800), it showed a large difference between the two with the higher clock resulting on top. Even handbrake and si Sandra, which I thought would show the ram better, had better times/scores with the overclock vs the ram.

Now yes, the ram upgrade is an option. But I was thinking that after an intel switch especially if I go 2011 route and get 4x 8gb corsair.

Please note, I'm not slamming you, your ideas, or anything. I'm just trying to fully explain, and hopefully have you do the same, so that we can ultimately come up with the best option. As im sure this is my upgrade now, but people to come will also be in a similar predicament and hopefully find this thread, and a best answer.

Oh, switch to corsair and get 32 gb. There is a g skill 32gb for 400 bucks. There are many options but since you are rendering, you already have a fast cpu so you dont really need to upgrade the cpu. Get a Cooler Master V8 GTS . Has nice led lights, easy setup, and is a really nice cooler

You would still do the conversions and other heavy lifting on the PC. The thought was that if my PC was as large as yours I probably would not want it running 24/7, so why not shove the HDDs and capture card off to a smaller system hidden in the basement somewhere out of the way?

When you get a movie you rip it on your computer and export it for the various formats that you need, then dump it all off to the home server. Then you could stream or download those files to your phone/laptop/desktop/TV/whatever whenever you want rather than having to have every action go through your monster rig. But if it doesn't bother you, then by all means continue doing it. I just find that sharing files on my PC is often way more work than just copying it to a NAS... but then again it depends on the devices on the network I guess.

Very true, but all the problems running on my pc have already been worked out. Im sure ill get some more sooner or later but have been pretty easy. And the 24/7 thing I get and thought of already which is why I keep the shows or videos, we are watching in bedroom before bed, on a usb which plugs into the media boxes in bedrooms. I also do that as to limit whats on the childrens so they don't #1 put on something either inappropriate or scary or #2 pick movie after movie all night long and don't sleep.

But the server is always in my mind especially if things get even more vast and I fill up my 3x3tb drives.

Note* the hot swap bays the drives are in are really nice, as if I visit my grandparents or parents I just pull the drive out and bring to their house to transfer newly acquired movies of mine that they want.

Ive read that the corsair ram (I think its gray/black with red writing if im not mistaken) has proved to be exceptional especially for the price. And I haven't seen ram usage get past 70% (that was only once) while rendering either. Which makes me think that 16gb is fine, unless I would go 2011 route then I would get 32 as I would need 4 sticks. But def. will consider the ram upgrade higher on the list. I actually just got my new ram, RMA's 2x4 sticks, just today in the mail.

Oh also I'm not getting a different cpu cooler, just spent over $600 on mine all together even more than that.
