I have a server running Server 2008 R2 and a laptop running Windows 8.1 Pro. The server is configured with Active Directory, DNS and DHCP, every time I attempt to join the domain on the laptop I get a message pop up saying that the domain could not be contacted. Also when I try to ping the laptop from the server or the server from the laptop I get the reply 'destination host unreachable'.
I am also using wireless on both the systems as I would rather not run cables around the house.
If anyone can explain this please do so.

Solution
well it would work more like this. You would use the local account on laptop but when you want a file on the server you could type in \\servername\sharename The first time you open the share it would ask for a name and password. You would set your shares to give access to a user or not. Then you could setup drive letters to go to the shares to make life easy.

How are you connecting to the network - specifically, you should have a wireless adapter on your laptop connecting to a wireless device on the network - are you seeing that wireless SSID to connect?

How is that device setup for assigning DHCP? Typically, you will need to state the IP address for your DNS server in the network setup.

The laptop is connected to my router. The laptop is currently using DHCP from my router. I have set a static IP and DNS for the server and I have set the specific DNS on the laptop.

The laptop is currently receiving its IP from the router.

I only want a few devices running off of the server as it will be for my computers, not the rest of the households so is there any way around this?

if you want to separate your network from theirs you could put in a firewall/router into the network run from the house lan into wan on router then configure from there. This can get confusing mostly if you want to pass traffic inbound you have to go to both routers to add routs...

So basically what I want the server for is FTP (so I can access my files over the internet), remote desktop, and I want all of my files to be stored on and accessed from the server eg I have a different drive for each computer to store data on the server, is active directory not the best thing to use for this?

Will a VPN do all of these things that I want to do? From what I can remember a VPN allows me to log into the server securely from outside the network and access shared folders, this won't allow me to have different user accounts for each of my computers and a network drive on the server for each of these accounts will it? Then there is also the case of setting up FTP which in my opinion is a lot easier, and also remote desktop.

I don't understand why you want different user accounts for each computer? You can still make local user accounts on a server and give them each access or not access to folders so AD is not needed. Remote desktop is setup out of the box but you will still need to forward the remote desktop port to your servers IP for this to work. You would also be able to use remote desktop across the VPN if you set this up.

I just thought it would be something useful to have. How would I go about setting up local accounts on the server? I can port forward if I need to so that's not a problem. I wasn't aware that you could use remote desktop across a VPN?

Yup when VPN it is like you are at home so you would just type in the name of your server or its IP and that's all. Local account on server is located at Right click My computer Icon got manage then you goto configuration then local users and groups then click users. Then just make new users.

Ah yes I remember this now. Are these users accessible from my laptop eg can I log in to them from my laptop?

I understand exactly what you mean now, can't believe I didn't think of this, it's so simple! Just need to setup a VPN now so I can access everything externally. Thank for all the help!

I have watched a video and the person setting up VPN said something about a DYNDNS account? Something to do with needing to know your public IP address to use VPN as it changes sometimes? Can you explain this?

Ok I don't know how much you know so sorry if this is to simple. To get your external IP go to the website whatismyip.com it will show you in big numbers what your public IP is. What DNS stands for Dynamic Naming Sysytem and changes words into the IP for you to make life easy so you can type in myhouse.com instead of 23.231.1.23 or something like that. But on the downside you will need to go purchase a domain name to use. Your public IP changes whenever your router is reset and sometime more often that that it is up to the ISP. Only business accounts don't do this. I have Comcast and mine stays the same for months so I don't know if dyndns is needed if you pay attention to how often your public IP changes.

I've sorted this out using noip.com.
But now i'm having trouble with my laptop and my server seeing each other on the network, I can't ping my server from my laptop and also the server does not show up when I try to map a network drive, any ideas?
