Hi there. I've been running dual monitors for a while now. I decided to get an HDMI to Mini-Display port cable so that I can use my television as well. It's detected and all but when I try to use all 3 monitors it will display the message "unable to save display settings". However, when I switch to one of my two old monitors + my new 3rd monitor it works. So basically each display works when they're being used only two at a time, just not 3 at a time. How can I run all three at the same time?

My setup is:
1st monitor (ASUS) DVI -> DVI 7870 port
2nd monitor (HP) DVI -> MiniDisplay 7870 port
3rd monitor (Insignia TV) HDMI -> MiniDisplay 7870 port

I have the MSI Radeon HD 7870

My first thought is the Eyefinity gotcha that one of the three HAS to be a display port to work properly... And/or the RIGHT type of converter (active, not passive). But this is just my first thought that I've seen a lot of with Eyefinity issues.

From the sticky on this forum:

YOU MUST HAVE ATLEAST 1 MONITOR CONNECTED VIA DISPLAY PORT
For an eyefinity group you can have a MAXIMUM of 2 of the following connections (DVI, HDMI or VGA) after these 2 all other monitors MUST be connected via DISPLAY PORT.

You can do this 2 ways. either by having monitors that natively support display port or using an ACTIVE display port to DVI - Single link adapter
See examples below

Mini DSP to DVI http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814999034
DSP to DVI http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814999030

NOTE: Eyefinity 6 edition cards (6x Connectors) can still only have 2 DVI, HDMI or VGA, the remaning 4 connections must be Display port or use an approved adapter.

I had a similar problem. Believe it or not, what fixed it was unplugging and replugging in the monitor power cable (removing power and restoring power) to the monitor while it was connected to the computer. Some computers will detect monitors but will get out of sync, and won't re-sync properly without power-cycling the monitor. Good luck and I hope this helps.

+1. Commenting because this worked for me.

Found this site because my 9-month-old Asus VG248QE suddenly stopped displaying video via DisplayPort from my Nvidia GTX 770.

HDMI and DVI worked fine. Windows would play the Found Hardware chime when unplugging/replugging the DisplayPort cable, but no video to my monitor.

Turned monitor off and on (using the power button) multiple times. Rebooted PC. Reinstalled Nvidia drivers. No luck.

Reenabled onboard graphics, couldn't get DisplayPort to work off of that, either. Ordered a new DisplayPort cable, new cable didn't work either. Was seriously worried that it was the DisplayPort on my monitor.

Found this. Unplugged the power cable for 10 seconds. Plugged it back in, DisplayPort immediately worked.

This worked for me. I have 3 monitors (2xDVI and 1xDP on a new GTX 970 G1 from Gigabyte and things were working until one day it wasn't working (side note: noticed spotty behavior in waking from sleep, not sure if this is related or why but, as long as I can recover I don't care much). Unplugging the problem monitor's power and reconnecting the power indeed worked! This sounds like a good solution for anyone experiencing the "Could not save changes" dialogue from windows screen resolution manager.

Thanks!

Made an account here to say, "thank you".

Both of my monitors just suddenly refused to wake up tonight.. after only having just gone dark into sleep mode. Since I couldn't wake either, I had to hold the power button down to shut off, then restart the computer.. and after restarting, my display options had been reset to (1) resolution of 640x480 and (2) "show desktop 2 only" and one of my Asus VG248QE monitors hooked up via displayport was telling me there was no signal. When I went in to change the display resolution, I also tried to re-extend the desktop and that's when it gave me the "unable to save display settings" error.

I had a vague thought that I should power cycle the monitor but then told myself that was a dumb idea :ange:.. checked all the cable connections, turned the monitor off/on via its power button, restarted the computer again, etc., then when I searched I found this topic. So - thank you! Power cycling the monitor (via unplug - wait - plug back in) worked. I was then able to extend the desktop and it's back to how it was working a couple of hours ago.

This topic is currently 3rd on page 1 for "unable to save display settings." Hopefully this reply will help it inch higher :)

Thanks again!

This helped me so much. Saying thank you doesn't explain the amount of frustration you just relieved off my shoulders. I'm not religious, but you are a god send

Who knew it would be this simple? I have the Razer Blade Stealth and Core with a Geforce 1070. Had 2 external connected via display port going with the native laptop all at once for a few days. Updated to new Geforce drivers and then only 1 display would work along with the laptop. Getting the cannot save settings error in the display settings and googled for hours. This solution worked. Unplugged the power cable to the monitor that wasn't working for a few seconds and plugged back in and was able to extend the desktop and save the settings. Lifesaver!

Just like the other I litterally made an account here just to leave a message. Complete power cycling of the monitors worked perfectly
Hardware: Three VG248QE 144hz monitors on displayport (15' cables)
Video Card: Geforce GTX960 with 3 DP outputs (HDMI and DVI as well)

One morning I woke up and they refused to wake up. I plugged an old VGA monitor in, no problem. I plug in one of the above monitors through HDMI, no problem. I get an identical monitor from work(except 60hz not 144hz model), on displayport, no problem. I use THE SAME CABLE that the DP monitor from work and it doesn't work.
Then I unplug them all.......wait 10 seconds.....and plug them in, WHAM...they all work again...what?!
Thanks again!
