Z87 chipset has minimum of 6 sata3 ports. However some of the manufacturers increase this number by 2 or 4 with additional controllers. "How many sata ports do I need" is a pretty much a personal question. 6 is a good number, but if that don't fit to your needs then you should look for the models that have 8 or 10 sata3 ports.

On the other hand, most of the quality motherboards have minimum of 2x cpu and 3x system fan headers (all 4-pins). This number should be enough to create a good airflow. However you always can add more fans and connect them to molex (with a fan controller if you dont wan't them to run full speed).

If Maximus 6 Hero and Extreme 6 have the same price or at least there isn't a dramatic difference between them where you live, then go for the Hero definitely. It has overall better build quality, better mosfets, capacitors and cooling design. And also some of the fan connectors of Extreme 6 are 3-pins. (it's not a very big deal though, its BIOS still should let you control the fan speeds but 4-pin headers are more efficient). Both are supporting Quad SLI btw, so you are fine for your future upgrade with both of the options.

If you can afford the Hero, then don't think much.
