I'm currently building a new computer for myself. I use it mostly for playing games, which it currently copes with fine, but after some Christmas overtime, I currently have a bit of spare cash burning holes in my pocket,

My GPU is a Radeon 7750 which is fine at the moment, but I may look to upgrade that in a couple of months or so if necessary.

I have been looking on a local suppliers website, and have seen a couple of motherboard / CPU bundles that appeal - my question is which is best, not only for now, but for potential future upgrades?

Option 1 is :
http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/motherboardbundles/mbb-83208b.html

AMD FX-8 8320 Processor - 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3 Memory - AMD 970A motherboard

Option 2 is:

Intel Core I5 4570 - 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz - Intel H81M Chipset Motherboard

Any advice or other options for about the same money gratefully received

At stock, the second option is better. Overclocked, option 1 may catch up or even exceed it in some games. Still, option 2 is generally the better one for gaming.

Even more so because the motherboard in option 1 isn't really suitable for overclocking.

The i5 4570 has a 3DMark11 Physics score of 4270, whereas the FX-8320 has a physics score of 6180 so it's quite a bit faster in that respect.

That doesn't paint a whole picture though, and you should know that the i5 has fewer cores, but they are stronger, whereas the FX-8320 has more cores, but they are weaker. That means the i5 has better single-threaded performance and the FX-8320 has better multi-threaded performance.

In Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, and Battlefield 4 (which take advantage of as many cores you can throw at them) the FX-8320 comes out on top most of the time. However, in older games and applications that don't utilize multi-threading the i5 4570 wins out most of the time.

So there you go, both are fantastic processors and each has it's strong suits.

TL;DR go with the FX-8320 if you use a lot of multi-threaded applications, go with the i5 4570 if you use a lot of single-threaded applications.

Not exactly. The FX-8320 is still a little slower in those games (actually a lot slower in Far Cry 3), just not by as much as in eg. Skyrim.
