I want to upgrade to 8GB RAM, but these days, DDR2 is so expensive that I am wondering if I should just buy DDR3 and a new AM3+ motherboard. Since I have currently have a (4x1GB) configuration, I would have to buy all new RAM anyway.

I've heard that the Phenom II only get ~5% performance gain from DDR3.

Note that I am not planning upgrade to the AMD FX-8350, so upgradability is not a good reason to buy a new motherboard.

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
Asus M4N82 Deluxe
(4x1GB) G. Skill DDR2 800 (PC2-6400)
2 x BFG Tech Geforce GTX 295

DDR-2 is pretty much double the price of DDR-3 these days, so you're definitley better off buying a new mobo that's ddr3, but also compatible with everything else you feel like keeping. DDR-2 will only get rarer and more expensive, while DDR-3 is gradually becoming cheaper. Good luck!
