I've recently been updating my hardware but i've been purchasing used products.
I have an asus m2n68-vm motherboard, and have been using a radeon 4670 previously, but wanted to be able to run a few older games like assassins creed with greater picture clarity etc.

I've purchased the AMD phenom 9750 cpu, and the RAdeon hd 6850 graphics card. I'm yet to try the cpu, but everything i've read suggests it is compatible with the mobo. However, when i install the graphics card, the monitor shows that there is no signal. Is this a compatibility issue with my mobo and the radeon hd 6850?

Well for some reason the exact model doesn't appear in their website (SF-550P14N).

However there is a 550w codenamed SF-550P14HE, at least the only one with 550w like yours so I'd guess is the same one but rebranded as "N" perhaps for North America?

Here's the link to it, see if it's the same as yours:

If so, it supposedly gives 25A on rail 3 and rail 4, but if your PSU has been used for some years already it's possible is not giving that output anymore, thus being unable to properly power the HD6850.

If possible test the video card with another quality PSU before going through the RMA process.

I've got a 550watt Super Flower psu. I'm only running win xp, but will soon be getting win 7. I'm not sure if that makes a difference re drivers each. I'll check power connector also.

Update:

Checked the power connector, that it was pushed in all the way into the graphics card, not a loose connection etc.
Fan on the graphics card powered up, but still no signal.
The PSU has two 6 pin pci-e power connectors, and I connected each to see if it made a difference but no luck
For more detail regarding the PSU, the model no. is sf-550P14N

I live in Australia and the psu is over 5 years old, so that could have something to do with it.
I don't have access to another PSU ton check the card, but is there any way to test the power output of the psu i have currently?

I'm yet to do a test of the amperage, however, after using an online wattage calculator to determine the appropriate PSU wattage for my set-up, I've found that with the new setup I require a 550w psu. Although I currently have one, given it is 5 years old (though only with moderate usage), I'm starting to believe that it may be the problem. I'm going to get this confirmed, but have already begun looking at replacement options.

I have come across a Seasonic M12II 620W PSU on special from newegg. It looks like it is at a great price currently and would be a good buy. Just wondering what your view on this psu is?

Well, in the end the answer was one of the simplest one could think off. I needed to replace the case. The case, and the way in which the motherboard was secured within it, was in such a way that the graphics card did not sit properly in the pci-e slot on the motherboard. New case, and now no problems. Didn't even need to replace the PSU, which was tested and found to be performing fine.

Many people will ask you to replace the power supply, because HD 6850 required "greater than 500W" according to AMD and card manufacturers. The first thing to check is the 6-pin PCIe power connector as without it the screen would be blank. I also bought a used HD 6850 and was able to test it on Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 460 (rated 420W) and it will still work. Under normal conditions, the HD 6850 will run at only 250MHz GPU clock. So a 300W or 450W power supply is just fine for booting up and testing if the card works. Only when you play games that the GPU clock will max to 775MHz and memory clock to 1000MHz, that's when you will hear hissing and whining sound from the card and jerky screen if the power supply is insufficient.

I'm now using FSP Hexa 500 and I could over-clock my HD 6850 from 775MHz/1000MHz to a stable 920MHz GPU clock and 1120MHz memory clock, without increasing voltage. Your 550W power supply, even if old, is good enough.
