Like I said, 25 years old and my first gaming PC build. Wasn't too sure on what to look for. Wish I would have found this site earlier but haven't really researched this stuff until recently... :/

Finally have a great stable job and can afford to upgrade from my laptop and do some real gaming

Don't worry, the parts in the link I gave you will handle everything you throw at it at high-ultra at 60fps or more

i5 3550p is of ivy bridge which is already outdated by haswell and upcoming haswell-e. The am3+ platform will allow you to upgrade to FX 8350 or so on. The FX 6300 will give you about the same performance as i5 3550p if you overclock it
