Hi all,
I am moving into a thick forested area in a national park. The mountains are not huge, but they are big enough to block reception to towers, so there is no cellular phone coverage, and no TV aerial coverage. I will not have good internet, or access to cable. There is a dial-up internet connection nearby whose wireless may reach my house, but the speed will be painfully slow. However, I will be able to go to nearby town and download some stuff every week or so. I am trying to think about how I will be able to get news, media, internet, entertainment, etc. What combo of radio, podcasts, etc should I think about?
Here is what I think I would like to be able to do:
-listen to podcast throughout the house; they may be on my desktop, tablet, or smartphone. i would likely capture new podcasts on my phone/tablet when visiting nearby town. But what is the best app or methods to manage these across platforms? normally I might listen to them only at my desk, but now I think they may be a prime source of media i want to listen to around the house (ie in place of tv). How can I have speakers or some network so I can listen to any room in the house. Do I want blue tooth or wireless speakers? The podcast could be on a desktop, tablet, or smartphone.
-I have digital movie files on my computer i will want to watch on my big tv which will be in a differnt room.. Is a blue-ray suitable? While i may not have good internet, I could easily net up a WiFi network in the house. I also want the blu ray or some device to watch dvds.
-I cannot get satellite tv because of the mountains. if the geography blocks satellite TV, is it possible that I should be able to get satellite radio? Sirius radio says i should be able to get reception. do you agree?
-if I can get satellite radio subscription, any suggestions on a receiver and system to use across the house? i heard some radios act like dvrs and store recorded programs. advice?
-assuming i can access the local wifi network near my house (which is a T1) perhaps I can do some downloading at night during low traffic hours. my main goal would be to download pocasts overnight (which I know how to manage with apps), but does someone know a a good app to download an entire 'newspaper' or news site over night so i can read 'the paper' or news offline during the day when the internet is at its slowest.
Basically any advice on how to set up a 3 bedroom house so I can listen to music, files, radio, etc as I move around the house with very slow internet,, no cell, no cable to aerial tv. How can i get access to news and entertainment with no good internet and possibly no satellite? I want to listen to real time news/music (ie fm,shortwave, satellite radio), as well as manage digital files to listen around the house (ie podcasts) and movies on the tv.
What are the best options for bringing in new digital media (ie going to town and downloading) and whats the easiest way to manage? Should I just use a tablet to store all media and hook it to a blue ray network? Is that possible? Or should I download everything onto my desktop as the primary source of media?
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
