Hi all, :)

A few weeks back I noticed some odd files in my C folder, and I'm wondering if it's safe to delete them, and if so, which are safe to delete.

I think it happened after I (by mistake) decompressed an installer (I think it was an old version of Directx).

You can click on the spoiler to see a list of files and folders I have in my C folder. The ones in bold are the ones I know (or think I know) I need)

"C:\VC_RED.MSI"
"C:\vcredist.bmp"

“C:\$AVG” (hidden folder)
"C:\AMD"
"C:\Downloads" (folder is empty)
"C:\Intel"
"C:\MSOCache”
(hidden folder)
"C:\NST" (folder is empty)
"C:\PerfLogs" (it has an empty folder called "Admin" in it)
"C:\Program Files"
"C:\Program Files (x86)"
"C:\ProgramData"
(hidden folder)
"C:\RaidTool" (folder is empty)
"C:\Users"
"C:\Windows"

"C:\eula.1028.txt"
"C:\eula.1031.txt"
"C:\eula.1033.txt"
"C:\eula.1036.txt"
"C:\eula.1040.txt"
"C:\eula.1041.txt"
"C:\eula.1042.txt"
"C:\eula.2052.txt"
"C:\eula.3082.txt"
"C:\globdata.ini"
"C:\install.exe"
"C:\install.ini"
"C:\install.res.1028.dll"
"C:\install.res.1031.dll"
"C:\install.res.1033.dll"
"C:\install.res.1036.dll"
"C:\install.res.1040.dll"
"C:\install.res.1041.dll"
"C:\install.res.1042.dll"
"C:\install.res.2052.dll"
"C:\install.res.3082.dll"
"C:\rundll32.exe"
"C:\shimgvw.dll"
"C:\VC_RED.cab"

All of the eula text files, the globdata.ini and the install.ini all talk about "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package".

Anyone know what I can get rid of?

Hi

DO NOT remove any folders

you have not highlighted in red \Windows \AMD \program files etc

safe to remove
-------------------
any file \elua*.txt
any file \install.res.*.dll

install.exe
install.ini
vc_red.cab
rundll32.exe
shimgvw.dll
----------------------
you probably want to keep VC_RED.msi though not necessarily in that location

some folders may have hidden files which you need to keep

Microsoft posted a Knowledge Base (KB) article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950683 which confirms that most* of the files mbarnes86 specified can be deleted; they exist due to a bug in an outdated version of their software. Per the article, globdata.ini, VC_RED.MSI, and vcredist.bmp can also be safely deleted.

* rundll32.exe and shimgvw.dll aren't listed in the Microsoft article.
