Can I put an 1150 pin CPU into a 1155 pin socket?

I have an Intel I5 2500k which has a 1155 LGA socket, unfortunately its overheating so I'm going to replace it. I was gonna buy a Intel i5-4440k which is 1150 socket, but dont know if I can put a 1150 pin cpu into a 1155 pin socket. My motherboard is a P8P67 LE

So sorry if I worded this all wrong.. I'm not as good with computers as I used to be :D

I appreciate all the help, I really really need it.

By the way, is the Intel I5-4440k better than the Intel I5-2500k?

Edit: CPU runs at around 80-90 and the thermal paste is gone. I just dont know if I should replace the thermal paste (which I have NO clue how to do) or replace the CPU..

Solution

Your motherboard supports all commerical LGA-1155 CPUs including the top notch i7-3770k. You will have to update the firmware (bios update) to add support for the 3000 series CPUs though. The 4000 series CPUs use a different socket and require a new motherboard, but the difference between them is pretty slim.

I literally cannot find a good CPU that can go into my motherboard, its like my computer is too old now. I literally bought all this stuff 2 years ago too :(

do you know any CPU's that are as good, or better (in the $200 price range) than the Intel i5-2500k that are 1155 pin? :)

Btw thanks for answering

Changing your CPU will not elevate the overheating problem. You need a better cooler or/and replacing the thermal paste between the cooler and the CPU. The new I5 does not offer enough performance gains for me, to make sense to upgrade. A 2500k as a gaming CPU is still quite adequate by today's standards.

I understand, but the thermal paste is gone. I'm guessing after 2 years of constant daily gaming use it wears out..?

You have to get new mobo, curtesy of intel- so no- you cant put 1150 CPU into 1155 socket.

"By the way, is the Intel I5-4440k better than the Intel I5-2500k? "

Yes. Yes it is.

The 2500K is arguably one of the best CPU's ever made and used the best construction technique(soldered goodness!!). Because of their inferior construction(bulk thermal paste under the IHS) all newer CPU's run hotter. I wouldn't be upgrading. But if you do... you better get an i7, or you'll be pissed because you won't notice a difference(unless you benchmarked and recorded the results).

Read Tom's latest Thermal Paste review and buy an good aftermarket cooler. The Hyper 212 is good and has rave reviews. Above it, I'd step up to a closed loop liquid: H80/100.

There is a way to lower temps on Ivy(LGA 1155) and Haswell(LGA 1150) CPU's, if you have the "guts" to cut the IHS off:

Good to know I accidentally got the best CPU ever made ;p thanks for your response!

I just asked a new question in response to CPU's, maybe you could check it out? :)

Good thing to remind us. Even with an i7 4770k you'd be very hard pressed to notice a difference in non benchmark scenario that excludes rendering video or 3d.

Uh... please dont call me dumb.. But when people say get a new cooler, I really dont get what they mean.. Like a new CPU fan, internal computer fan or..?

not going to call you dumb. it's the chunk of metal with the fan on it that goes over top of the CPU (your 2500k) to keep it cool.
