Can't connect PC to monitor

I have just built a custom PC which powers up fine (power LED turns on, fans spin and disk drive opens), but when I connect the VGA cable from the PC to the monitor nothing happens. Before the monitor is connected to PC it says something like 'cable undetected' and as soon as I plug it into the PC it says 'No signal' for a few seconds and turns off.

The graphics card is an EVGA GEFORCE GTX 650ti BOOST.

I have tested the monitor, PC and VGA cable individually and they all seem to work. When I plugged the VGA cable from a laptop to the monitor then it worked, so I don't think the VGA or monitor are faulty or broken. Also, the USB ports on the motherboard work as well so I assume that the rest of the ports, including the VGA one, should also be working.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

As far as I'm aware I'm plugged into the graphics card. The six-pin wire is in the graphics card. I'm new to all this so I'm not really sure what an onboard graphics solution is

I went into the computer shop today and asked, and it all makes sense now. It's pretty much what you were saying: I had plugged the VGA into the motherboard instead of the graphics card.
