If I set up a wireless on my home network and then turn off the main router, will the wireless router still work? I don't want to have to use an ethernet cable.

Wired it much better, I wouldn't use wireless, except for convenience, or there is no other way.

If you are adding a wireless router, why aren't you replacing the old router?

What do you mean by shut it off?
Why do you want to leave it in your network?

It depends on where the Wireless is getting its connection from. If it is getting its connection from the main router, then no turning it off would stop it from being able to work.

But you can't have 2 routers passing out addresses at the same time.

The second one, needs to have DHCP disabled, if you are going to use both.

If you are installing it next to the old router, there shouldn't be a need to keep the old router, unless you need the wired ports, on both routers

It depends on what your "main router" does and what you want the "wireless router" to do without the main router. There are too many variable here to give a definite answer without some clarification on what you want to accomplish.

If the "main router" serves only as a gateway for your internet connection, then you will loose internet access but maintain internal networking.
