Nvidia graphics card not detected

My graphics card (nvida gtx550 ti) is not detected. Under device management under divice adapters a generic label for my graphics card appears "microsoft basic visual adapter" now my mobo ASUS m5a99x evo 2.0's drivers are up to date for this install via install disc. I have also updated all updates for windows 8.1. Now under updates there's one for nvidia wnnd 1.1-1.3 now I looked these up and their suppose to allow windows 8.1 to run a graphics card but if I download it it crashes PC. So I don't download it and go to nvidia web site and update driver that way and while installing it crashes pc. I've tried uninstalling "microsoft basic visual adapter" and installing updates/drivers and the ame thing happens. I tried different PCIe slot, different Graphics card and the same problem happens. I contacted Nvidia and Asus IT support and they no less than new born does about computers apparently. I read that I might have to rewrite some code for pc to recognize my graphics card. But any suggestions will be welcomed as I can't think of anything else besides RMA mother board. Which I've done 4 times for this pc build before discovering that I had a single pooly soddered wire in case going to reset button which was putting the red led cpu light.

mobo: MSA99x evo r2.0
OS: windows 8.1
cpu: AMD 8350
psu: 600 watts
gpu: pny geforce gtx 550ti
