Long story short, havent got a PCI-E connector for my HX850 modular PSU, and just bought a second gfx card.

can I buy a second PSU just for running my 2nd card, and in 2 weeks time when I can get my connector back, flip it on eBay?

ive read threads, and all the answers are 'NO, unless you turn them both on the same time with a connector' (never explaining why) or 'just buy a bigger PSU' which doesnt answer the question.

i know its not standard practice, but surely its ok to do so?

If it is big enough, just get an adapter.

The 2 power supply is a common hack, not complicated.

They even have adapters now that plug into the ATX plug.

I'll see if I can find one.

Best choice is a PCI-e power adapter, if that is a 850)watt power supply.

Most card, or close to it, come with an adapter.

2 power supplies

As you can see it only has the green start, and a ground, nothing you can't do yourself, if you are handy.

I did it a long time ago, and I don't remember having to start them at exactly the same time,

though millwright gave you the answer you are looking for - just save yourself the hassle and wait the two weeks for your cable to come back.

that is sad how people tell you to get a "bigger PSU" when the one you have is sufficient :pfff:

2 power supplies isn't a good idea.

why isnt it a good idea?

oh, and i havent got any leads to even plug into adapters because the hx850 is modular, and so there is only the right amount of leads plugged into it right now.

I asked in another thread if I can use any generic pci-e, from maplins or whatever, and the answer was no. Finding just 1 corsair lead in brighton, UK is going to be impossible.

Well first, it is a dumb/expensive solution to a silly/cheap problem. Where is your connector right now? It will definitely be cheaper to have someone mail it to you than to buy another PSU and then take a loss selling it later, and need to buy another adapter.

You can also contact corsair and see if you can get the appropriate cable from them with 3-5 day shipping, they sell presleeved cable sets for their modular PSUs but those sets work just as well as spare parts!

its not that dumb - its my only day off for about a month from kids or work.. , and I can buy a new PSU then flip it on eBay, lose about £10 in the process, thats fine for a good days gaming.. ..

I just want an answer about if its bad or not - like if the phases have to be from the same power supply, or something to do with loads or volts or anything .... a valid reason, not just 'its a bad idea' without explaining why.

I won't try to talk you into it, but all I can say, is it always worked for me.

The only thing that has to be coordinated is the cycles, and since that is controlled from the power plant, it will be exactly the same on every plug in your house. in fact it is the same on every house in the US, as generators feed the same grid.
