Ok the title says it all. I have a PNY gtx 770 and i'm looking for the minimum card thats able to do the physx processing smoothly. I'm seeing alot of people recommend the gtx 650 due to its higher clocks over the 650 ti. I think the 650 is a bit much for physx but I wanted to know is if the gts 640 can do the job and not drag down the min frames?

I have a 650 watt seasonic 80+ gold psu so I can handle two cards but I don't want a power needy card just for the sake of it, so i'm looking for the card that is meets the ability to (1) handle physx and not drag down the 770, (2) do so and not consume alot of power. Will the 640 meet these requirements or should I go for the 650?

FYI what i'm NOT looking for is info about how the 770 can handle physx on its own. I'm sure it can, however I want the 770 doing 3d and not dealing with physx at all. Also i'm not into SLI, so I won't be saving up or putting money towards another 770, but I will put a few bucks towards a used 640 or 650 for physx. I'm also willing to get some older lower end cards like gts 450 or something like that.

So will the 640 cut it for physx or do I NEED a 650 to meet the specific requirements (number 1 mostly) I listed? I'll hang up and listen. Thanks.

The PROBLEM is that it will vary between games. It can even vary in the SAME game if there are different levels of PhysX to choose from.

Roughly speaking you need about 75% the performance of the main card or else you actually BOTTLENECK and slow things down as the main card can be left waiting.

I doubt even the GTX650Ti is good enough. Linus from Tech Tips did some tests, and I've seen results elsewhere that confirm these results.

*Keeping in mind what I said about this VARYING from game to game, here is the Linus video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbww3dhzK0M

You can PAUSE at 2:11 to see his main results. In this game, a GTX580 got 49.7FPS by itself. If a GTX560Ti was used for PhysX it went up to 55.3FPS (about 10% faster). That would probably be similar go a GTX770 and GTX660Ti.

Other:
My card is similar (GTX680 OC) and in several games I have to disable PhysX or leave it on LOW if an option. In some of these I don't care as PhysX doesn't always look better. Sometimes the eye-candy is too jarring. In Batman Arkham City, both PhysX and DX11 should be disabled as they cause severe stutter and performance issues. In Batman Arkham Asylum it works fine.

I monitor a game with FRAPS when adjusting the settings, and if PhysX drops me below 60FPS I don't use it (I game at 60FPS VSYNC ON). The extra eye-candy can be nice, but not at the expense of other settings or frame rate.

I saw that vid. The video showed that all of the cards with the exception of the 8600 improved the frames and that he had no idea where the sweet spot was. Also the video is from 2011. There are alot of newer cards out with different tech in them. So in this case the 640 or 650 may very well handle the physx with no bottle necking. That's what I'm trying to find out. So I guess what i'm asking is has anybody tried a 770 with a 640 or 650 or 650 ti that has experiences to share?

Edit: You turn physx off if it affects the frames and that's fine for you, I dont want to do that. I want the eye candy AND the solid frames. and I'm willing to pay a LITTLE more for it. So I will seek out a used 640 (IF its good enough for the job), 650 or 650 ti if need be. The thing is I need someone who has actually used one of these combos to give real world testimony, because the both of us seems to just be guessing.

Now if someone says physx CANT be done with anything less than say a 660 at max physx with no negative effect on frames, then I may consider turning off physx if need be as thats leaving the realm of what im willing to pay.

As I said though, it will be DIFFERENT for every single game. There's no exact card someone can recommend. If you get a GT650 it might add 5% boost for one game, then bottleneck another by 20%.

I've already Googled this for a while, and you can find results for a few games with different setups but nothing too detailed.

I'm not really "guessing" but you have to find data that corresponds to:
a) your exact game
b) exact PhysX level in game (if choice)
c) your graphics card (i.e. GTX770/GTX680 + GT650 as dedicated card)

So if you get a GT650 for example, you'll then have to test each game with the dedicated card to see if it hurts or helps.

Mafia 2: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2010/09/03/ma...

It CAN make a big difference. There was almost a 40% improvement in frame rates when adding a GTX275 to a GTX460. I may be wrong, but i thought the GTX275 was almost as powerful as the GTX460 though.

I'll have to see how much power the 275 draws. I'm sure my psu can handle it, but I dont want a power hungry card if there is a less energy greedy option out there. Any BL2 results you found with any of the cards?

Please do not go lower than a GTX 650 or 640. A GTX 275 is just too old with relatively few CUDA cores, which are key, in addition to clock speed. There really is no definitive source for which card to get, but there are plenty of sources to help. Here's a couple:
