2 Different cards, non SLI

So this is my scenario. I have a Gaming PC, i recently upgraded to a Nvidia GTX 770. I run 2 monitors, and because of the 2 monitors my performance suffers. I upgraded from a GTX 550ti, and I'm wondering If I could go out and get a new motherboard and throw in my 770 for my main display and my 550ti for my secondary display. These two very different cards would not be SLI bridged. Is it possible to do this? or is there a simpler/easier solution?

Performance in a game shouldn't suffer much if you are only gaming on one monitor, and using the other as an Extended monitor for other tasks. It would also depend on what program was being used for the 2nd monitor.

I see no point in using the second card.

How have you determined that your "performance suffers" anyway?
Did you run a game or benchmark with ONE monitor only, then add a second monitor (as extended only) and repeat the test only on the first monitor?

Other:
1) Why would you need a new motherboard? Is your current one incapable of supporting two cards?
2) If it turned out you lost a few FPS by using only the GTX770, then just for an extended monitor support I'd recommend an inexpensive HD6450 or similarly low-end card, or in some cases onboard/CPU video.

Having a GTX550Ti in the PC just to support a single extended monitor would add to the heat and noise.

I never did a benchmark test or anything but I know that performance isnt as good as it should be. My friend who has a 760 is getting better fps than me in BF4 and I have better computer specs. And when I have the monitor disconnected completely I am getting better FPS. And I am not concerned about heat because my case is very well cooled. Noise, well I wear headphones. My current motherboard (Asus M5A78L) is not capable of supporting 2 cards. If I could get onboard/CPU video working that would work possibly, but I am not sure how to do that. Sorry if dont sound very educated about these things, I am kinda new to the building PC world.
