hi i have a 1gb 8400gs (i know its a bad card) and i overclocked its core clock from 520mhz to 600mhz and its memory clock from 600-675 and after about 30minutes of mw2 on 720p extra settings it only appears to raise to a peak of about 41-42c and i was wondering should i overclock higher and what is a safe temp for the card? thanks in advance

Well there you have it. I certainly didn't win the silicon lottery with my card! That was a pretty good increase in FPS that you got with only 100MHz. I haven't used novabench although I have heard of it. I prefer Furmark for GPU benching.

For OCing your GPU you can go as far as you'd like. The limiting factors will be stability and heat (unless you up the voltage which can fry your card). Considering the excellent results you've gotten so far, if it were me, I would try for another 100 to 200MHz in 25MHz increments (on the core and ram). Test the stability and temp after every increase.

I have an EN 8400GS silent (fanless w/large heatsink) in my old/previous computer. I never had much luck OC'ing the core past 700MHz and memory past 850MHz (was unstable even though temps never went past 60C). The amount of OC you will be able to get depends on the "silicon lottery" meaning that it comes down to the microscopic qualities of your specific chips (GPU and GPURRAM respectively)
Temperature wise try to keep it between 60-70C under load (or less, 42C under load with slight OC is good).

Just to note, I never saw any real improvements with the OC I did on that card (max 2-3 FPS gain for 10-15C raise)
MW2, is that MechWarrior 2? If so I LOVE that game! (haven't played in more than a decade but good memories :) )

Really because I increased the memerory clock and core clock by 100mhz each and my temps say bellow 42 on high load and get an extra 7fps on mw2 and nova bench increases from 160fps 50 points to 195fps 61 points and mw2 as in modern warfare 2
