Should I be using an HDD for basic storage and an SDD for my operating system? does this combo maximize performance?

Thanks

I would go with a 120GB SSD - the 840 EVO can be found at that capacity for $90.

If you aren't putting large files that gain no benefit on it, a 120GB ssd is MORE than enough for your operating system and programs. (And even one or two of the few games that do benefit from it, like MMOs to get rid of the loading screens.)
If you have a SSD and a HDD, you should install your operating system to your SSD, then transfer your 'my documents' folders and such to the hard drive - use the SSD for the operating system files and for programs you install. (I wouldn't put games on it, though - install those to the hard drive.)

So then you use your hard drive for data storage automatically.

correct me if im wrong but the SSD will give me access to my files and data (as well as start up my PC) a lot faster than the HDD, right?

No.

It will let you start up your PC a lot faster. It will let you open programs that take a long time to load (like photoshop) a lot faster.

Data files, unless we're talking very large spreadsheets, already open fast enough that you would be able to tell basically no difference between having them on a hard drive vs a solid state drive.

That sounds great. I like having a good, fast startup. What GB SDD would you recommend?
