Sorry. I was looking at the wrong brand motherboard. The GIGABYTE model has a heatsink on its VRMs but the MSI model doesn't.

Cheaping out on a heatsink just to save a few cents. You can even see the silk screened outline for the heatsink right on the motherboard. You would think that MSI would have enough intelligence to avoid the problem and reduce RMAs but the bean counters won out.

Then why is the FX-8320 on the GIGABYTE 970A-G43's official CPU Support list along with 17 other CPUs with a TDP of 125W?

Your spreadsheet link is not provided by MSI. It's from overclock.net

http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboards-vrm-info-database

It's used to determine how well the specific motherboard will handle overclocking.

Check this forum, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=170719.0 sometime they have problem like the lower VRM/ power phase count even you don't OC the cpu. If you cool the VRM then the PC will be fine. If you want you can find more online.
