I will be purchasing some memory soon. i wanted to know if the kingston hyper x blu or red memory would be compatible with my amd build. I've heard some people saying that certain brands of memory (like crucial ballistix) isn't compatible with certain AMD chipsets. could you confirm or debunk this? PLUS which is the best budget memory you can buy today.

your best bet is to go to the motherboard's website and see if the memory is listed on its QVL. Alternately, you can go to the memory maker's website and use their RAM selector/configurator program/app, tell it your motherboard info and it will list all compatible memory they make for it. As a last resort, you can go to pcpartpicker, go to system build, add your motherboard and then choose the add memory option to see if the memory you want is listed.

Mobo QVLS are pretty worthless, see here:

http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=10566

The DRAM makers tend to test their DRAM at the specified freq, which is a good indicator, but also often check with high end CPUs that can carry faster DRAM than other CPUs, and your CPU is the big player when it comes to freq, might see that a particular mobo will run 2800 sticks (and prob tested w/ an OCed 4770K or so), but if you are running a 4670, it's not going to be able to run 2800 at 2800...so what CPU are you pairing with this mobo, for most 1600 is a good bet, the higher end FX CPUs can often carry 1866 sticks, look for sets in 1600 or 1866 with a CL of 9 or lower for most current AMD CPUs and 1.5 voltage
