Do I need a BIOS update for Windows 8.1? (Getting a black screen on driver updates)

So yesterday I just built my own desktop and installed windows 8.1 x64 bit on it. Everything up to that point went smoothly but whenever I need to reboot the computer after a windows update, driver installation (for graphics or motherboard), I get a black screen on start up. The only way I've been able to get out of the black screen has been by doing a fresh install of windows 8.1 (which is the only media disc i have). I was wondering perhaps maybe my motherboard isn't compatible with windows 8.1 because it needs a bios update? there are drivers for windows 8.1 on the gigabyte website, but I don't know how to solve the problem.

Motherboard: GA-H61M-USB3H (rev. 1.0)
CPU: Intel i5 3350 P
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 650 Ti
RAM: Crucial Ballistics Sport 8GB

  1. Yes your mobo is compatible with Win 8.1
I would recommend you update the Intel INF installation drivers first if you haven't done so.
    Then perhaps the BIOS version.

Update the BIOS to the latest, then ensure you have the latest mobo drivers for Win8 or 8.1 available, 8.1 has had a number of issues. Also, bypass the graphics driver until the other Win updates are in
