Okay. so, I am at my wits end here. I'll try my best to explain but I am very new to this kind of stuff, so doing my best to learn. Here it goes:

My hard drive(the one that's attached to a CD-rom) is reading as an error in boot up stating "capable and status bad". I have secondary hard drive that has been formatted for storage that should be in good shape, last I checked it worked fine.

I used windows downloads to put windows 7 onto a usb flash drive.

I then opened my case and switched the primary hard drives power and data cord to the secondary hard drive.

I started the computer up and entered the bios and went to go change the boot up sequence. It gave me three options at first (i did a various assortment of cord arrangements with the hard drives and tried a few times with all cords plugged in) they were, usb pny (flash drive info), removable disk, and dvdram (this is the sea gate hd? why is it called a dvdram, it wasn't the cd-rom) with an assortment of letters and numbers.

I tried all different kind of combinations, having results anywhere from it goes to asus system restore, to it just saying "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

I checked all the connections every time. I just cant figure this out. Please help!

1. the hdd does not connect to the optical drive. all parts should be connected to the motherboard, which controls the system.

2. Boot priority is set in the BIOS, accessed before the system boots. Make sure you have everything plugged in and the optical drive set first.

3. Please explain if you are installing windows or recovering lost data from a system failure

so youre saying I should have my failed(primary) hdd set to boot first? then my usb? I'm trying to install windows. i figure ill recover any data lost from installing it on my secondary, it wasn't anything special. but i'd rather not mess with my primary before i could get someone to look at it.

How old is your PC?

To install windows from the disc, you need to set the optical drive first, not the hdd. The optical drive is not connected to either hdd, it's connected to the system. Set it as the primary boot priority and put in the installation disc, then follow the onscreen instructions for installing the operating system

Uhh, did you make a proper USB win7 boot drive?
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/a/install-windows-7-usb.htm

For the HDD cables and ect, for now only have the HDD you want to install windows on plugged in.
Then you have to go into the BIOS and set USB/Removable Devices to priority #1, or do a boot override/manual boot and select the USB/removable device that way (which may be a bad idea as windows has to reboot several times during an install and if the boot order/priority is not setup right it won't reboot automatically properly)

ya, i had to do it a few times since the 64 version you have to put the bootsect in there manually for some reason. I think its possible that something else is going on. ive tried everything listed and then some on my own accord. idk ;.; sad day for me.
