I need to make a relatively simple pc for my kid brother. he plays stuff like minecraft and mmm maybe tf2. anyways i'm more of a intel cpu person so i dont really know much on the amd side. i know that apu is basically the sandybridge type cpu (in the sense that they have their cpu and onboard gpu). i have a old radeon hd6850 so i don't need any gpu power on the cpu (oh btw the reason im looking at amd cpu is because they're cheaper). i'm looking for amd cpu around the power of first gen i5 to 2nd gen i3ish amd (i dont know amd cpu's nomenclature so i dont really know where to start.) and i'm also looking at core duo and core 2 duo amd equivalents as well. any suggestions would be nice. again i dont really want apu cuz i have a amd gpu already*

PS: i'm trying to keep the price of cpu+MOBO under 100-125 dollars*

A good processor that is comparable to the i5's and is better than the i3's is the AMD FX-6300. It's a six core desktop processor and is extremely popular for it's price/performance ratio and also features an unlocked multiplier in case you need to overclock it to get some added performance in the future. I have included a link to it below.

As for a core 2 duo comparison I would recommend the AMD Athlon X4 750K. This is a quad core processor that also is very popular for it's price/performance ratio. I have also included a link to it below.

To get the power of an second generation i5 you are going to want the 8320, which is in itself costs $150.

You would have to get the Athlon II X4 or the Pentium G3220 to get a combo under $125, and only just for a half-decent motherboard. The Athlon II X4 will be faster than the Pentium, but it's the best CPU you can get on the AM2+ platform. The Pentium is cheaper and can be upgraded to a Core i5 or such later.

my question says first gen i5 - 2nd gen i3 c:)

The FM2 athlon is an APU with the graphics disabled . They were probably faulty when the chip was manufactured so they are a bargain buy and ideal for people using a graphics card

Do you live by a Microcenter ? Yes - go there and buy a FX 6300 + MOBO for 109.99 + tax

If not ...you MAY consider a FX 4300 ($105 amazon) + Mobo for around $50

I recommend these because:
1. Microcenters rock: best CPU + mobo deals avail. All the time, but you gotta go to the store :(
2. Both these are mulitcore (6&4) will support years of gaming and future gaming
3. the 'extra' $25 for the 4300 if you have no Micro avail will just show your brother how much u really love him :)

Good Luck.

OBTW: I loved my 6850 ... until it died :(

I'm pretty sure all the AMD APU's and CPU's come with a heat sink. The provided heat sink will work just fine as long as you are not overclocking or running it in a compact case with insufficient airflow.
