Hey guys,

I would say I'm fairly tech savvy. But there are literally so many choices and options to build a PC, I would love to get some advice from the real experts - you guys!

Here's what I would like to do with the machine:

- 90% of the time I use my computer for internet, mainly car forums and Youtube.

- I would like to be able to play some of the latest games (BF4, GTA V, and newest RTS) without worrying about lag.

- I do some basic video editing. I'm not worried about waiting a little longer to encode a video, because I hardly ever actually encode a video.

- Price I would like to shoot for is $1000 to $1,500. I'm thinking that, for my needs, I can get below $1,000

Now here's the catch. My current computer I have used for over 5 years and I still occasionally use my older Dell with Windows XP (I think I purchased it back in 2005?), so I would like to FUTURE PROOF it as well, which is why I'm thinking of getting an i7 processor.

So I'm thinking for the core items of the build:

- Intel Core i7 Processor

- ASUS MB (suggestions?)

- 1 or 2 TB 7200 RPM HDD (WD or Seagate)

- Samsung SSD (for boot files?)

- NVidia GTX670 Video

- 2x4GB memory (suggestions?)

Any suggestions would be great. I am an open book and ready to learn!

-Seth

Hey! I am very into cars and car forums as well. You drive a 4-door GSR?

You should be getting an i5 not an i7. They perform the same in games and everyday tasks. The i7 is only needed for heavy video encoding and 3d modeling.

Change that GPU to a gtx760 as it is newer and performs about the same and costs less.

Any 2x4gb memory kit that is 1.5v 1600mhz will be good.

Get a 500-600w PSU from Antec, XFX, Corsair, Seasonic.

Get an h87 motherboard if you do not want to overclock or if you do, get a K series CPU and a z87 motherboard.

Thank you for the advice! Any suggestions on a case? I'm more of a functional guy - no need for neon lights and such. Just something high-quality, simple and affordable.

I actually owned a 92 Eclipse GSX. Overseas the AWD model is known as a GSR-4, which is where I got my username. I now drive a 2003 Lancer Evolution :)

^^ Very nice. I love the WRX's also. I would gladly donate an appendage if I could get the time and money to do an older Impreza RS ore even 4-door with a full swap. My Eclipse made 528WHP with a stock block, built head, and a Garrett 3076 turbo on E85. It was a monster. The Evo is pretty much the same build, except the turbo is an OEM turbo with a billett 3076 wheel, so faster spool and more airflow. :)

I'm going to post a sample PC build for you to critique - again, thanks for the advice!

Aha. I've got you.

As far as Motherboards - I have NO idea really what to look for, other than I know Gigabit, ASUS and some others are good quality. However, what really separates the Motherboards? It seems they have all the same features, yet there are literally thousands of models floating around.

Okay! Thank you very much for the advice! I'm pretty excited about building a PC - never done it before, other than Frankenstein PC's robbing parts from one to another, and fixing my laptop when it breaks!

This will be a great computer! You should love it!

Does your EVO hook on the street? I sold the wrx with this foxbody idea because no matter what everyone would 60foot on me. Even with the 2step, I couldn't launch as hard on the street as the 8.5in or 10.5in (obviously) tire foxbody and camaro guys making similar HP.

I don't race the Evo like I did the Eclipse, but I'm sure the Evo would get off the line better since I have LSD in the trans and also in the rear end. My eclipse would cut 1.7 sec 60-foot times at the track on regular H-rated street tires. I haven't seen a RWD that can do that without slicks.

Funny story was when my Eclipse was only around 300-350HP, I ran a Z06 Vette at the track twice. Both races I won by a few tenths of a second, yet my MPH was 110-ish and his was 117-120. I just burned him so bad on the line he couldn't catch up before the 1/4 mile.

So all in all, an AWD vehicle is superior from a stop, but at a roll a RWD or FWD with the same power will walk you....as long as they can hook. I had a buddy with an LS Camaro and he could run low 11's all day at the track with slicks, but couldn't outrun me on the street because his car couldn't hook.

Suspension plays a huge role in it also. You can get the Mustang to hook with the right tires and suspension. I'm no suspension expert, being that it matters a little less for me, but I'm sure the guys on the Mustang forums can steer you in the right direction!

Problem is that most people around me that run on the street run 10.5" slicks on their 500hp stripped (insert cheap-o 80s muscle car here) from a dig. I wasn't willing to put more money into the increasing beat ass wrx to try to hang. Plus as soon as anyone tries to put more than $200 down you'll see everyone and their brother dumping glue (read VHT) all over the ground. Didn't matter what I did, every 10.5" tire car with a half decent suspension setup was dragging the bumper and had a length on me before we even passed the flagger.

I'm pretty sure even though I love imports and always will, a foxbody will be twice as cheap and twice as reliable as a street car once I learn to drive it properly. Looking to do a cheap and simple stickshift car with a 351.
