Hi everyone, i am buying a pc off of craigslist, and i was wondering if an intel core 2 quad q6600 overclocked to 2.8 ghz would bottleneck the amd radeon hd 6870? I am trying to run far cry 3 at ultra at at least 30 fps, would this accomplish that?

no. the q6600 is perfectly decent for that card... it may well be old but its still not a bad cpu for gaming as it has 4 true cores running at 2.4+ghz.
i would however recomend you get a decent cooler and bump the cpu to 3ghz as this will ensure your getting that absolute best from it.

As you can see from this hierarchy chart, the Q6600 is down at Tier 5. I just sold off my Q8200 system so I know how buyers are fooled into thinking that these 6 years old processors are still "good". Sellers will tell you Q6600 is "4 cores" but you have know that the motherboard and memory are probably still at DDR2 800MHz. As of 2014 prices, you can buy a very cheap Core i3-3210 with cheap H71 (H61 B3) Ivy Bridge motherboard and cheap DDR3 C11 1600MHz memory kits. It will still be 3 tiers better than holding on to a Q6600 system. You will be tempted to buy expensive CPU cooler to overclock the Q6600 but that 15-20% increase from overclock won't make it anywhere near the i3-3210 (2 cores / 4 threads).

I am happy that I offloaded my Q8200 system from 2009, but the buyer who bought from me will be holding an antique that will be almost impossible to sell off in 2015. I hope the Craigslist ad gives you a very good price for you to buy it.

Radeon HD 6870 is a good card, about the same category as the modern R7 260X but at half the price if you get it from second-hand sources. I got my HD 6850 for only $71, wheres an equivalent modern card is around $120.
