I am embarking on putting my first computer together with the parts here at http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2QmRK. The plan is to use it for gaming, and I am intrigued by overclocking, but bleeding edge specs are not necessary and I will be going slow and small anyways because first time. I am trying very hard to keep the price under $1K, but it's not going so well. The thermal paste and the case have already been purchased.

Feedback and recommendations humbly requested. Thank you for your time, expertise, and attention.

if you have already bought the case you are good to go with motherboard you have pointed out. Options would have been extended if you had case supporting ATX form factor mobo. Anyhow, you might taking look at one part i.e. Ram. I would buy atleast 1600mhz speed ram of cl9 as an example below: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f312800cl9d8gbrl. Rest is all well and good.

I get messages in PC Part Picker saying that using 1600 mhz memory is dangerous with the chip I've chosen though... I mean, I trust what a real person has to say about it, but is there something that I need to do to keep from destroying my investment?

Dangerous??? Most people are using 1600mhz speed ram with i5 3570k processor and i have never heard anything like 'dangerous' word before with that configration. It is a standard speed supported by your motherboard so you need not to worry about anything. There can problem with cpu heatstink which can possibly contact with ram's heatstink but you don't have to worry about anything as there will be no problem with CM Hyper 212 Evo and your memory. You are good to go with 1600mhz :)
