internet is working fine, avg wont open and pc won't turn off right away, takes longer than usual. My email was sending out spam, but that's the only weird thing. Also, it seems like the hard drive is always going off even when I'm not on the computer? I'm confused. The hard drive thing has been going on for over a year. But the programs not responding happened last night.

just an addendum, combofix is a powerful malware removal tool but should not be used unless you are experienced or are under the guidance of an experience malware removal person.this program can turn your computer into a doorstop so please seek help unless you really know how to use this program.

Well, there could be a couple of things causing the software stuff...
But for your hard drive, I'm thinking Windows power settings (check it under Control Panel) may simply be the culprit.

Now back on the software stuff, what are your PC specs?

Oh sorry about that... let's see...

In WinXP, follow these steps to see what your power scheme your computer is following: (Power scheme = it's like how your computer manages it's power consumption like when it goes on standby, hibernates, or even turn off the system including the hard drive)

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows-xp/help/setup/configure-power-management

Here's a screenshot of the Power Options screen: http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2003/0303/2003-mar-09/PowerOptionsSchemes.jpg

Now if you look at that screen, one of the options are about the hard disks. Just set "Turn off hard disks" to "Never" so that it never shuts down.

As for the computer specs, give out stuff (if you can) like what your processor is, the amount of RAM you have, your hard drive size. You can get these info by right-clicking on your "My Computer" icon your desktop then clicking on "Properties".

Sounds like you are poxed right up with multiple viruses and programs working against you there pal. You should scan using avg and spybot, but these wont nail malware you have allowed to be installed. It may pay to retrieve your data and re install windows.

more than possible.happened to me a couple of years ago.the only thing i hope is that this can be gotten rid of with a few scans, but i have my doubts.the first thing with malware is to find out the name of the nasty you are up against. but first things first, it thinks the advice we have given will be a good start.

MalwareBytes will go a long way to sorting it but to be certain, I suggest using ComboFix after carefully reading the instructions at the download site. All the scanners yo uuse will work more quickly if you use a good cleaner to remove all the clutter first. ATF Cleaner from www.atribune.org andd CCleaner from www.piriform.com are my preferences - each finds junk the other doesn't.
