Hi guys, so when I'm running a game on max settings with no programs running in the background I get smooth gameplay but when I have chrome open or sony vegas it slows down in my game a sh*t ton. What piece of hardware is causing this??

Your CPU is the thing that would cause this but yours is WAY more than powerful enough to run 20 chrome tabs and have no problem with gaming.

I have an i5 2310 (2 generations old and much worse than yours), and I game with 5+ tabs open in waterfox, CPU monitoring software, GPU temp software, and FPS monitoring software with no performance hit at all.

I don't think this is hardware related.

Go to the motherboard website. Find you board. Download all the most recent drivers. Make sure you have up t o date Java and Adobe as well.

Also make sure your BIOS is the most recent version and flash it if it is not. Then check your GPU drivers with nvidia's website and get the most recent ones.

Generally parts do not ship with the most recent BIOS installed and this in generally NOT something an online retailer will flash. Also, new drivers come out every week or two and it is good to stay up to date. The is REALLY true with GPU drivers. New ones come out every 2 weeks to a month and they usually improve performance alot. It is VERY good to stay up to date with graphics drivers.

Chances are your BIOS is NOT the most recent one. That board could have been sitting on a shelf for months before it got put in your computer.

I did a build for a friend with a motherboard that came with a BIOS version installed from 8 months ago when the board first came out.

What is your current BIOS revision and what GPU driver are you running?

Well I thought this would be a software issue and to be honest I know its not my cpu temps. My high is 45 degrees. So really I haven't tried anything. I'm really just trying to figure out if anyone else has had this problem so they can give me a straightforward answer.

I am also away from my computer and getting back on Friday so I can't test anything at the moment
