i want a graphics card that will run dual monitors and play the newest and greatest games on the highest settings for years to come. I’m looking at getting a geforce gtx 780 ti but it comes with a hefty price tag. I’m willing to drop some dime for quality gear but i also don’t want to be unnecessarily extravagant. The question is do i really need a gpu that’s this powerful?

When you say duel monitors do you mean have say Battlefield 4 playing on both monitors? or one monitor has the game and the other has something else?

honestly i intend to do both. it really depends on how in depth i am in the gameplay.

I'd say yes, if you are gaming, and want the highest settings, for years to come,

I'm not a gamer, but know a little about graphics performance.
I Flight Sim, and i5 on-board gets highest settings.

In my opinion high performance gaming starts with the R9 270, followed by the R9 270X.

The GTX760 @ $250, is the best bang for your buck. The 760 can compete in some benchmarks with $300 cards.

Spending more than $250, you will get better performance, but increase is small compared to cost.

Here's some benchmarks.

GTX 660 ti is good and if you upgrad it and buy another GTX 660 ti you could have a power near GTx Titan.
How much money do you have. it depends on your money.

well, the card im looking at is $750. thats the max of what im willing to spend, even that is a little painful. but from what i looked up the 660 ti is max 300, so if i got a pair of them it would still be cheaper than the 780 ti with more power. but that also creates complications. i intend to run liquid cooling and im not sure how that would work. and i would have to learn how to run dual cards. but if it saves me money for more power im down.

I always like to go with the more expensive single card rather than two lesser cards. It's just simpler and less noise, heat and power consumption.

Based on those benchmarks, I would also consider a regular 780 or an R9 290/290x. It looks like especially with the radeon cards you get most of the performance for a lot less money. Save that money, and in a year or two you can add a second card if you need it by then.
