4tb WD4001FAEX drive for secondary storage formatting allows use of half of drive.

I bought and installed a new 4tb WD4001FAEX SATA drive for secondary storage but the drive only lets me format approx half the drive leaving the other half unallocated. It makes no sense and is both a major waste and a bummer. It actually shows two separate volumes on the drive! I use a SSD for my C: drive which operates perfectly. For what its worth, I have a LGA 1150 Gigabyte Z87X-UD5H motherboard that is UEFI. Does this have something to do with MBR and GBT? I could really use some advice.

You guessed right. The commonly used MBR partition style only works with disks/partitions up to 2TB. For disks with a capacity higher than that, you have to use the GPT partition style for that disk.

You can convert MBR disk to GPT using the MiniTool Partition Wizard Bootable CD:
