So iv'e been searching for an easy tutorial for the seemingly complicated topic of setting up your own Domain name that is linked to a dynamic IP for auto updating. At first i thought it would be as simple as creating one through a service like No-Ip but as i go through the tutorials the amount of costs that i will have to be paying keep mounting and i'm not even sure what is necessary and what isn't.
I don't mind paying for a good domain name or DDns provider, but when the prices start getting towards the hundreds i'm a bit reluctant to part with that money without some sort of confirmation of what the service is specifically going to do for me.

If someone could just give me some advice on how to create a link to my home dynamic IP address from a unique domain name that i register. Even some explanation of what a dynamic dns involves would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dan :)

I'm with net-me.net. Totally free, so far, though I'm on one of their subdomains instead of having my own (you can buy your own if you want).

What device do you want to use to update the DDNS address?

I have a dedicated pc that i am running linux Ubuntu off of, This will likely be the device that i use to update the DDNS although i have heard of methods in which you can set up your router to update it as well, Either works. So i take it you cant get any higher end domains like .com or .net through net-me.net? And do they offer a DDNS service?
Also im running off of cable internet if that changes anything.

I believe you can get them to register a domain, but you have to pay a few dollars instead of them giving you one of their subdomains for free. E.g. their free domains are <yourdomain>.net-me.net, while you could buy an actual domain from them like <yourdomain>.com.

There are many domain providers out there; I only picked them because they were free.

They've got instructions for most OSs including linux - though you'll need to know a little command line stuff to do it.
