4th RAM Slot not working properly on Asus Maximus Hero VI

So today I made some upgrades to my system, including installing a new motherboard, the Asus Maximus Hero and an I5 4670k. My specs are as follows:

CPU: I5 4670k
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Mobo: Asus Maximus Hero VI
Ram: 16gb Crucial Ballistix 1300mhz
GPU: MSI GTX 770 Twin Frozr
PSU: Corsair AX860

So I after some messing around getting a bootable USB to work to install Windows 7 I notice once everything is loaded that only 12GB of ram was showing, and after looking on the motherboard the last stick of ram was not secured at the bottom. So I powered down, took out the ram stick and put it back in, only to find first of all the system didn't boot, no display signal or usb power. Thinking I might have got a bad DIMM I swapped the sticks around until I could get it to boot, this time it fired up for 5 seconds and powered back down in a constant loop. Now I have it so that it boots with only the first three slots filled (12gb ram). Any idea what might be causing this? I haven't updated bios yet.

Your help would be very much appreciated.

When you swapped the sticks around, you did that with all 4? Have you tried swapping sticks with only 3 of the slots filled? This would help narrow down whether you shorted your RAM stick or if you have a bad slot on your board.

Yeah I tried all 4 sticks. Only difference was once it booted up with 8gb and once I got the 4th slot working aswell but again with only 3 sticks in. When I swapped the dimms round again it didn't work.

Have you tried resetting your BIOS/CMOS to defaults then putting all 4 in?

If you're able to get the stick that was previously not set properly to start fine, but not with all 4 slots, it's not a bad stick then, and you're looking at possibly a fault on the motherboard side. I would say try resetting the BIOS to defaults on a configuration that works, power down all the way, make sure the PSU is off, and then reseat all 4 RAM sticks and start up. If not, it's possible you just got an unlucky bad board, I would try to exchange it if nothing works.

Sounds like a bent pin in the CPU socket. I would RMA the board.

Is this all sticks from a single package of DRAM? (a single 4x4GB package?) Try with two sticks in 2-4, if that's fine, then reset the CMOS and add sticks to 1-3, go into the BIOS and manually set the sticks to spec i.e. the proper freq and timings, then add+ 0.05 to the DRAMs spec voltage

Yeah I've tried swapping ram between the three slots, all my dimms work apart from in the 4th slot, I still can't figure out why it worked once but it hasn't again since. I'm going to look at getting the board RMA'd. Thanks for your help guys!

Also updated bios and reset CMOS no joy, looks like a dead ram slot.

One other thing you can try, loosen EVO up a bit then snug it down, not super tight but snug, then give it a try, if the CPU is overly tight somewhere it can cause the Cpu to sit unevenly a bit and not have full contact with the pins

Good idea, just tried this when I got home from work but sadly no luck. Took the CPU out while I was at it to check for bent pins but everything seems fine. I was very careful installing CPU aswell, just dropped it in. Guess I just got unlucky with this board *sigh*.
