I just bought 16gbs of corsair ram in 2 sticks, just wondered if i can use my old 4gb ram(2x2gb ddr3) too? both are ddr3 so is it possible to have 20gb ram? my board allows up to 32gb, good or bad idea?

Dear, it is not necessary to have the same brand but what is required is that both modules should have same timings i.e CAS Latency and bus speed and that's it. However, it is recommended to use same brand's modules to ensure that they are compatible and that this configuration works.

Yes it can work with 20GB only if they have the same timings. If bus speed is not the same and both modules (in your case three modules) are picked by the system then it will restrict all the RAMs to the lowest bus speed.

Here is my recommendation: You may check it as it will not harm your computer.

no it won't work. You can only run ram from which is from the same brand, and has the same product number. If you want more ram you have to buy more of that 16Gb kit of yours. And remember not just the same brand, but also the same product number.

Don't forget to select best answer :D
