mother board of (hp comp) computer fryed . installed hd in another computer (dell)but xp wants a activation code from microsoft.! Microsoft does not recognize the activation nbr that xp gives me. This computer is not connected to net. Trying to activate by phone

Solution
Have you thought about going to a freeware OS? Ubuntu? Linux? Considering how MS isn't going to keep the XP in its lineup any longer however OEM's were thought to be on that edge for a lil while longer.

If its files you'll need Aldan has made a good point. IF its trying to maintain the same drive integrity and programmes, you're biting down on your luck there.

Only problem is i need the files on that hdd ,I use it to control a homemade cnc router. Replacing the mother board on the compaq computer would give same problems ?????

Actually I have the product ID but the activation screen for xp uses a different code nbr ( 9 /6 digit nbr (54 total digits) It does give me the option to change the nbr but says (do not change unless told to do so by Microsoft rep.)

I have the 25 character key but xp activate by phone wants an instlation ID number which is provided when the activate by phone screen comes up but I tried it 3 times but after I enter the nbr. the recorded message says it is not recognized by thier system.

To use as a slave drive I need another pwr suppy as mine only has a singe hdd plug on it

Well I think my luck has run out ,I was in the process of backing up that hard drive when the board blew ! I had intended to backup a long time before soooo my fault. The mach 3 machining program will not run on Linux or Ubuntu asfar as I know.

Thanks to every for your excellent suggestions
I've been dissatisfied with Microsoft for a long time. this is where depart!
