automatic repair launches on start up

Win 8 will not launch... due to auto repair running on start up... get to choose an option screen, I select the trouble shoot section but the trouble shoot window does not open, so I can't perform a reset, restore or repair functions. Not sure what to do... I don't have a recovery disk.
I am at a loss.

Learned today with a similar Dell laptop issue (may be different for other makes) Reboot the machine and as it's starting up hit the F12 key multiple times. It took me into a system diagnosis I was able to run and it ran through checks on all system devices telling me my hard drive was not attached and I had a fan failure.

If this works for you it will at least be a start to figuring out what's going on.
